Jo meets an older professor in her boarding house in New York. Their emotional engagement is sparked by the professor's reading of the Goethe text Kennst du das Land - "Do you know the land where the lemon trees bloom?" Adamo has set the text to a wonderfully soaring melody sung graciously by Chen-Ye Yuan. The song is one of the best moments in a score that listeners should find engaging. It is fundamentally consonant and comfortable, but Adamo constantly freshens it with dissonance and intensity.
