BLACK TOPAZ gradually takes the unusual combination of piano, flute, clarinet/bass clarinet, trumpet, trombone and percussion (two players) from acerbic and reflective ideas to a heightened level of radiance. The writing is highly coloristic, with the piano serving as concerto-like soloist.
