Preceded by the Two Chorale Preludes and followed by Little Fantasy, this piece is part of Christmas Vespers, a half-hour self-contained seasonal program. It may also be performed separately.

The Three Wise Men requires a narrator, although the text is included in the first trumpet part so that the player may recite the text as an option.
