The centerpiece of the program, both physically and emotionally, was the Quintet for Piano and String Quartet by the contemporary American composer Ezra Laderman… The work is highly accessible, tonal, one might even say richly melodic. The outer movements are a building up to and a falling away from the haunting central slow movement, which seems to speak to us from somewhere beyond sadness.
I found myself deeply moved and greatly encouraged about the future of serious music and the audience for it. This audience was rapt. There was an urgency in the performance that made us feel that something of great moment was taking place. The final movement was a dazzling display of virtuosic keyboard and string techniques as well as ensemble playing that brought the audience to its feet.
