Reviews

  • Like so many composers, Carlos Chávez had both a public and private side. His public face can be found in his symphonies. It can be argued that Chávez's most intimate and exploratory thoughts are to be found in his chamber works. UPINGOS for oboe celebrates melody. Given only a single line, the composer implies his underlying harmonic structure much in the same way as the Baroque masters. Here, ironically, Chávez finally goes back to his Mexican roots, but it is a journey informed by much non-Mexican experience. The result is gratifying on all fronts. The performance is fine - indeed excellent. This release makes an eloquent case for reassessing a composer we thought we knew...Chávez is important in our musical continuum.
