Reviews
The Violin Sonata is full of percussion writing and crunching piano clusters [with] enough ideas for several sonatas. [In] Ballet Mécanique, its "machine age" percussion riffs now sound fun rather than subversive. Fighting the Waves, with its haunting tenor part and its swooning writing, is a spooky piece of late romanticism masquerading as modernism. the Jazz Symphony and the Jazz Sonata are uninhibited fun, full of jazzy, foot-stomping solos. Lithuanian Night is thoroughly captivating. Concerto for Chamber Orchestra and the beautiful little Printemps pieces are quiet gateways of relief in the midst of so much explosive energy. This important release illustrates that Antheil was not just a "great Amercian original," but simply a great original.
