• Cowell was the most adventurous of modernists, "inventor" of the tone-cluster. Yet Cowell wrote 18 folk-like, predominantly modal, conservative symphonies. The [works] on this disc are attractive pieces, sweet and very well written. I doubt you'd be able to find a dissonance in any of these works that couldn't be accounted for by rules of traditional tonal counterpoint. That makes their interest and individual character all the more striking.
