• In Kirchner's compact essay Music for Orchestra II [his] idiom is a meaty but restrained romanticism, and he draws his structural lines crisply, with a draftman's confident hand. He is one of the few Schoenberg acolytes who gives equal weight to both the rigor and the expressiveness of his teacher's legacy, and, at 75, he remains one of America's best composers.
