Programme Note
Premiere: June 14, 2009 Cathedral Choral Scholars Edward A. Broms, director Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Boston, MA
Text: Song of Songs 8:6a, 7a
Composer Note: This setting of a very familiar text from the biblical Song of Songs was originally composed in 2009 in my capacity as composer-in-residence at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Boston, MA. The variable size of the cathedral's choir resulted in the creation of unaccompanied motets that could be performed effectively with either large or small groups in both secular or sacred contexts. Two lush outer sections frame a brief middle with a two-part imitative texture.
