A Chicago Winner! Shostakovich’s 'Mosow Cheryomushki'
© Library of Congress
Shostakovich's
Moscow, Cheryomushki
won Chicago Opera Theater's second annual People's Opera contest. For this contest, in which patrons are invited to vote for their choice of a work to be staged in a coming season, Shostakovich's satirical 1958 operetta competed against Mozart's
The Magic Flute
and Strauss's
Capriccio
and won with over 9,000 votes. This production will mark the Chicago debut of the work and COT's first-ever staging of a Shostakovich piece. It is scheduled for the 2011 season.
This contest doubles as a fundraiser with each vote costing $1.
