Brief Biography:
Composer Jay Greenberg was born in 1991 in New Haven, Connecticut. His first compositions were written at the age of six, and his formal musical training began the subsequent year. Starting at the age of ten he spent several years as a scholarship student in a special program at the Juilliard School, taking classes at both pre-college and college levels. Following a feature on the TV show "60 Minutes" he embarked on a career as a professional composer, being commissioned by a number of orchestras and ensembles; his works have seen public performance by the Pittsburgh Symphony, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke's and many other national and international ensembles, and have been staged by the New York City Ballet. A CD recording of Symphony No. 5 and String Quintet (performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Juilliard String Quartet with Darrett Adkins respectively) is available through Sony Classical. Greenberg is published by G. Schirmer and managed by IMG Artists. He is currently reading Music at Peterhouse, Cambridge.

Full Biography:
The young and gifted Jay Greenberg has already created a significant catalogue of solo, chamber, and orchestral literature that examines and builds upon classical forms. The youngest composer ever to have an exclusive agreement with Schirmer/AMP, Greenberg's other notable first achievements included exclusive contracts with Sony Classical and with IMG Artists.
His first Sony Classical CD showcases his Symphony No. 5 — recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra under José Serebrier — and his Quintet for Strings — with the Juilliard String Quartet and cellist Darrett Adkins. Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony recorded his tone poem, Intelligent Life, for release on a second Sony all-Greenberg disc. A recording of I Still Keep Mute is on Rideau Rouge Records.
Greenberg is writing a new piece for the American Brass Quintet. His latest works are: Blues for string quartet, a prize-winner at Staatstheater Darmstadt’s 2011 ‘Soli fan tutti’ composer competition; Neon Refracted, commissioned by the New York City Ballet to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lincoln Center, premiered in June 2010; a setting of Vladimir Nabokov's poem "I Still Keep Mute" for soprano and string orchestra, premiered in Moscow in December 2009; Skyline Dances for the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York, Louisville Youth Orchestra, Vermont Youth Orchestra, and Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, premiered in New York City in June 2009; and Four Scenes, a double string quartet for the Sejong Soloists, premiered at Korea's Great Mountains Music Festival in August 2008. In October 2007, violinist Joshua Bell and the Orchestra of St. Luke's premiered Greenberg's one-movement Violin Concerto at Carnegie Hall. The Eroica Trio joined Per Brevig and the East Texas Symphony Orchestra to premiere the Concerto for Piano Trio and Orchestra in April 2008.
Born in 1991 in New Haven, CT, Greenberg displayed an early aptitude for cello, piano, and composing. Choosing composition, his formal lessons with Antony John in theory and composition began when he was seven; three years later he enrolled as a scholarship student in a special program at New York's Juilliard School of Music, where he took composition classes with Samuel Adler, music theory with Samuel Zyman and Kendall Briggs, and multiple courses in ear training and piano. This was later followed by composition classes at the Yale School of Music. He is currently studying at Cambridge in England.
