• [Britten’s] originality in his Piano Concerto lies in the way that he absorbed the idioms of Ravel and Prokofiev into a language of his own. He was not alone in doing so: several years earlier John Ireland had done something similar in his own piano concerto, which also merits more airings than it gets these days.
