Programme Note
Songs from North and South, Lindberg's first piece for choir since 1978's Untitled, was written at the beginning of 1993. Erkki Pohjola, the director of the Finnish Tapiola children's choir, had commissioned it a few years previously. The piece offers five movements, including texts drawn form the poems of E E Cummings and an anthology of traditional American Indian texts translated into English. Since the score arrived late, the choir was only able to prepare one movement for the concerts held in celebration of its 30th anniversary in Järvenpää, then is Espoo, its home town. Songs from North and South is dedicated to Erkki Pohjola.
