Programme Note

KRYSTALLEN was written in 1973 and first performed by Susan Milan (flute) and Clifford Benson (piano) for a BBC Radio 3 broadcast which was relayed on 28 January 1975.

KRYSI'ALLEN is a short piece in three sections. The first begins as it were out of nothing and consists of harmonic areas in a continually fluctuating texture. The second section is slaw but is derived in its intervals from the quicker opening section. Finally the opening tempo and textures return, this time with more pauses so that the piece gradually fades away thus reversing the idea of the opening whim began out of nothing.
