Programme Note
This work was written in memory of Athene Harriadis, who died tragically in March 1993. Her inner and outer beauty was reflected in her love of acting, poetry, music, and of the Orthodox Church. The text is taken from Shakespeare's Hamlet and the Orthodox Funeral Service.
John Tavener
Reviews
-
Things such as deep, long-held pedal-notes, simple scale-like melodic movement, uncomplicated harmonies occasionally leavened with a single bitter-sweet dissonance, a switching back and forth between major and minor, slow tempos, and lots of repetition: these are some of the chief compositional tools over which Tavener has attained his deceptive mastery.
Michael Dungan, The Irish Times, 29/10/2008
