Reviews

  • John Tavener opened the three-week festival ['Ikons of Light'] devoted to his music with his latest work, Apokastasis, which lasted all of three and a half minutes. Moreover, two of those minutes consisted of a Tibetan temple bowl dying slowly, ever so slowly, away. A practical joke? Well, only insofar as the divine comedy is a joke. What counter-tenor Michael Chance created, with the aid of Fretwork's viols, was the most intense burst of musical ecstasy I have ever heard. And the ensuing silence, before the furious applause, was something to be savoured in itself.
