Programme Note
I had the first idea for Tol-Pedn when walking along the cliffs of south Cornwall. Although the wind and waves crashed violently against the rocks, I felt that the place had a sense of underlying calm, which I have tried to reflect in this piece. The alto flute part is based on an In Nomine by William Byrd; the piece belongs to the 'In Nomine Broken Consort Book' which contains works written by over 20 different composers for Ensemble Recherche.

"It was astonishing to witness the strength of emotion he conjures up in the short and wispy Tol-Pedn (...) It's silence was compelling."
Kenneth Walton, The Scotsman, 21/08/2001
