Programme Note
This setting of Richard Crashaw’s words for treble solo, four-part mixed choir and organ was made in 1955. The form is clearly tripartite, perfectly reflecting the text. The opening ascending figure on the organ is the source of most of the thematic material. Used not only in the meditative opening and close of the work it is also heard on the organ linking the ecstatic vocal lines in the central section. The organ part is an outstanding feature. Far from being mere accompaniment it makes an important contribution to the musical interest.
