Programme Note

The Lullaby comes from an incomplete opera, The Unicorns, to a libretto by John Heath Stubbs. When Sarah Francis asked me for an easy oboe and piano piece, I made the oboe version of this aria and Jack Brymer and I gave the premiere of the clarinet version on the Sea Princess in the Mediterranean on September 29, 1986. As a song, the Lullaby has been recorded by Elisabeth Soderstrom, with brass, and Marilyn Hill Smith, with piano. It featured, with an apparently real unicorn, in the 1988 South Bank Show documentary on my work.
