Programme Note
Written for the Choir of Queens’ College, Cambridge, this setting of the Cantate Domino was composed to commemorate the restoration of the College chapel’s historic 1892 Binns organ. This work shares some musical material with the first movement of the Dorchester Canticles, an Arts Council England commission for the Bournemouth Sinfonietta Choir.
The original purpose of this version of the Cantate Domino, the Queens’ College version, was to allow the newly-refurbished organ to be used to telling effect at the première; this fact should be kept in mind during any performance of the anthem.
