Programme Note

On its way through For Violin and Orchestra the violin encounters various colourings or sonorities or instrumental "blocks", as they in fact are. The material is often linked to particular instrument groups: the diatonic clusters of the strings (at first pizzicato), the Arabic-sounding melody beginning in the woodwinds about ten minutes into the piece, then their bird-like signals - and finally the jungle sound of the brasses.
The violin meets these characters individually and gradually in more and more combinations. This is the formal idea of the piece. The material can be itself, and it can be together with others, despite differences in articulation and timbre and rhythm and expression. The form is more meetings, encounters, addition and subtraction than concerto. Which is why the word has also been left out of the title.
