Programme Note

Per Nørgård: LIN for clarinet, cello and piano (1986).
LIN - meaning approach - is my third work for this instrumental combination. (The first one being from 1955, the second one, SPELL, from 1974.) The title is Chinese, from the Book of Change (I Ching) and refers to the state of getting close to the core of something. In this one-movement work (lasting about 16 minutes) the approach is to an always more open lyrical soundscape departing froom the dense polyphonic and rhythmically ambiguous style of playing.
The final phase is, as mentioned, open and melodically free, almost simple, with the sonorities close to the sound of a sitar, for instance, with the plucked cello double stops in quasi unison, creating a slightly out of tune tonal quality. Unstructured, improvisational and hushed miscro-events conclude the approach - and the piece.
