In his "Sonata for Flute, Oboe, Cello and Harpsichord," [Carter] contrasts the color and character of the different instruments in this richly various sonic conglomeration with astonishing freshness, in particular writing for the harpsichord as if no one had ever heard the thing before and he were inventing an idiom for it.
