• Chávez's music evokes Mexico's pre-Hispanic past and the contemporary political reality of a new Mexico. The power, lyricism and profundity of his Piano Concerto is impressive...The demands are behemoth. Once the soloist enters, the solo playing is practically non-stop. Still, the musical texture includes the piano in a kind of concerto for orchestra that makes stringent demands on all sections of the orchestra, not just the solo instrument.
