Composer Note:

Overture (Youth) has been commissioned by and dedicated to the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra and its director, Ruben Gurevich, on the occasion of the orchestra’s fiftieth anniversary.

The work was composed during 1991 in Ithaca, New York. It was inspired by young people, their vitality, aspirations, hopes and expectations for the future. It is written in a joyous, celebratory style.

—Karel Husa

Reviews

  • Known for a strong rhythmic profile in his music, Husa created an angular statement in “Youth.” A multitude of percussion and brass at full resonance constituted a vigorous presence, with strings and woodwinds rounding out the sonorities. As such, the overture served its purpose very well – an opening cry of celebration.

  • The Overture is brief but pungent, with motifs that ricochet from one section to the next like echoes from a canyon wall. “Youth” as Husa portrays it is neither idyllic nor jolly, but a time of seething emotions held barely in check. The Youth Symphony interpreted the sparkling, faceted score with self-confident zeal.
