• Gala performances often have such an air of self-importance that genuine artistic merit can be hard to discern. The Louisville Ballet neatly skirted this peril by centering its 50th anniversary gala on contemporary masterworks.
  
  "Hecuba's Lament" and "Lullaby" from Alun Jones's extraordinary adaptation of THE TROJAN WOMEN - heart-rending and sumptuous mated to Karel Husa's music conducted by Jeff Holland Cook - was to experience the Louisville Ballet at its most profoundly relevant. You want something worthy of a gala? Here it was, in all its wrenching glory.
