Programme Note

Laderman has described Sonore as a tone poem that explores the notion of sound itself. The work is in one continuous movement, featuring three contrasting gestures. While Laderman calls the first gesture “linear, declamatory and passionate,” the second gesture is marked “frenzied” in the score. The second gesture always follows immediately after the first; they return three times in the piece. The third gesture, in contrast to the others, expresses tenderness. Sonore was premiered on November 10, 1983 by the Denver Symphony.
