Programme Note
Synopsis: Cherevik and his daughter Parasya visit Sorochintsy Fair, where Parasya meets her lover Gritzko. Initially horrified, Cherevik eventually gives his consent to the relationship when he finds out that Gritzko is the son of an old friend. However his wife Khivra is less accepting and forbids the relationship, until she is forced to show humility after her own affair with the son of a priest becomes public. Parasya and Gritzko are finally reunited and the opera ends happily.
