Piston's VIOLIN CONCERTO NO. 2 opens with a soaring lyrical theme, which is then contrasted with more strongly contrapuntal material, and sharp rhythms. The ensuing Adagio is one of Piston's most inspired creations, an expansive, long-breathed movement, [with a] beautiful, heart-easing melody.
This is a richly lyrical outpouring, though, as always with Piston, the chromatic turns and angular orchestral counterpoint leaven the sweetness with a stoic self-possession, preventing things from becoming sticky or cloying.
Run out and buy this recording.
