Reviews

  • In Two Folk Songs from Chinhai (1989) for chorus and orchestra, Bright Sheng has blended an Eastern folk idiom and Western techniques to produce music of unusual sophistication and expressive power.

Peter Davies, New York Magazine, 19/10/1992
  • Instant communication has shrunk the world with such speed that people like Mr. Sheng have become valuable arbitrators, helping to reconcile formerly distant cultures to their new-found and often uncomfortable proximity. Mr. Sheng’s vocal lines, with their limited but expressive melodic vocabularies, are redolent of his Chinese origins, but he has elaborated on them in Western ways. Similarly, his orchestra is European, but it speaks in metaphors, referring to East with flat, primary colors and separated little bursts of light. Coping confidently with Mr. Sheng’s rhythmic complexities was Amy Kaiser’s Concert Chorale of New York.

Bernard Holland, The New York TImes, 05/10/1992
