Programme Note
The entire score grew outward from Lysia's aria, "I am not my own," in which she chooses her city over herself - by which choice no one is more surprised than she. It crytallizes the question of the opera, which - if the question of Little Women was "why must things change?" - is, in this piece, "Am I my sister's keeper?" Whose needs come first, yours or the world's?
