Programme Note

Davies was one of several composers to write tributes or memorials on the death of Michael Vyner, the artistic director of the London Sinfonietta. This short, quiet elegy is an Adagio for a Haydnesque orchestra.

This work was written as a tribute to Michael Vyner, who died on 19th October 1989. Approximately six minutes in duration, it is based on the plainsong ‘Cor meum et caro mea exultaverunt in Deum vivum’ and is scored for two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, timpani and strings.

The first performance was given on 25th October 1989 at Glyndebourne, Sussex by the London Sinfonietta conducted by the composer.
