Fragment for the Virgin (string orchestra version) John Tavener

Reviews

  • Her interpretative maturity and technical aplomb ... radiates a warm glow throughout this generous and well-chosen programme (the Tavener world premiere sounds especially ravishing). Harding and the LSO provide sparklingly virtuoso support, and the recording gently cushions the sound without losing detail.
Julian Haylock, BBC Music Magazine, 01 July 2005
  • Fragment for the Virgin was written for Benedetti by John Tavener; he seems to have been particularly influenced by her playing for this is quite unlike most of his music. After a bold opening over a drone, it is sharply sectional with warm melodies, high dynamic contrasts and a hushed close.

    Editor's Choice

Edward Greenfield, Gramophone, 01 June 2005
  • John Tavener's brief Fragment for the Virgin is memorable both in itself, and for the intensity and conviction that Benedetti brings to it.
Malcolm Hayes, Classic fM Magazine, 01 June 2005
  • 'Reminiscent of the young Yehudi Menuhin' is how Sir John Tavener describes the Ayrshire-born violinist Nicola Benedetti, winner of last year's BBC Young Musician accolade. And there are certain parallels. Like the teenage Menuhin, the 17-year-old Benedetti has already had music dedicated to her, in her case Tavener's ethereal and impassioned 'Fragment for the Virgin', which she plays most beautifully.
Rob Cowan, The Independent, 17 May 2005
