• All praise, then, to the Guards' Band and their conductors for this enterprising and entertaining programme. And entertaining it is: the dominant characteristic of the Sallinen ... is humour. It's hardly surprising that The Palace Rhapsody should be so witty: it takes its material from Sallinen's 1995 opera The Palace, which is a trenchantly comic satire on politics, here recast in a dance fantasia using Sallinen's special brand of symphonic minimalism.
  
  I hope this is only the first in a series of recordings of such repertoire.
