Reviews

  • The Concerto for Orchestra is the more conservative of the two in style but it remains a fine achievement, in no way put in the shade by the greater radicalism of the Cello Concerto written 20 years later.

The disc is very well recorded and worth investigating.

Arnold Whittall, The Gramophone, 01 June 2006
  • Both works here enjoy fine, committed playing from the orchestra. The Warsaw Philharmonic has a distinguished history with the Concerto for Orchestra, and its performance here lacks neither precision nor passion. The chatterings which open the Capriccio notturno are very well done indeed ... an excellent and eminently recommendable rendition of what is still hardly an over-exposed work.
Carl Rosman, International Record Review, 01 December 2005
  • In the Concerto for Orchestra, Wit surpasses his earlier recording in both precision and energy, with the opening packing a real punch. The filigree murmurings of the second movement are delivered with tight control of rhythm and phrasing, and the long finale is perfectly paced to an inevitable climax. The recording [...] has good depth and separation. It's certainly up there with Barenboim's or Tortelier's versions and ahead of Lutoslawski's own [...]. This showpiece needs real virtuosity, and gets it.
Martin Cotton, BBC Music Magazine, 01 October 2005
