[My favourites] were Chant, whose effusive writing for the piano suggests Messiaen, and Bubble: Rainbow-(spirit level) because of Reed Thomas's hyper-sensitive setting of texts by Elizabeth Bishop and Emily Dickinson. This is a composer who is aware of her listeners and who wants to please them but who also does not pander to them. Indeed, this is music that depends on active and repeated listening, which is why it is wonderful to have it on CD!

...striking in concept, texture and timbre....
Poetry often inspires [her], as the four Rumi Settings for violin and cello vividly reflect....[Her] Six Piano Etudes [are] piquant and mysterious explorations of rhythm, motion and keyboard colors. Thomas achieves a kaleidoscope of shapes and shading with clusters, terraced dynamics and myriad other devices....
Thomas shows a keen ability to employ texts in passionate, unyielding settings. The brief Bubble: Rainbow Spirit Level is an apt 95th-birthday present for Elliott Carter. The disc's eponymous work, Prairie Sketches, places a solo soprano in shimmering relationships with a small instrumental ensemble...
