• The latest Naxos Portrait charts the musical development of a remarkably inventive composer, chiefly known these days as Master of the Queen’s Music, an establishment position that runs contrary to his lasting reputation as a confrontational modernist. Max may well be ‘established’, but he’s lost none of his native ability to confront tradition or confuse those who think they know what he is about. An ideal access point for the open-eared.

• There is at least one other compilation calling itself a portrait of the composer, but Naxos’s offering affords a careful chronological scrutiny as well as a 113-page booklet, with a text by Roderick Dunnett, that is a full-dress monograph and nicely done.
