• The score has all the trappings of a grand operatic ceremonial, with massive choral writing, and generally a far less austere musical language than Glass used for his operas of the 1980s. The 2004 studio recording is based upon the Linz production that had been the work's European premiere in tow years earlier; it's conducted by Glass's regular champion, Dennis Russell Davies, in a lucid and suitably imposing manner, [...] But as the work that cemented Glass's place in the American musical establishment, The Voyage needed a recording; this will do nicely.

• [The Voyage] has had to wait 14 years for its first appearance on disc, and though that delay is in some ways unfortunate, in others it allows a more mature perspective on the work. In one important aspect, Glass cleverly transcended the immediate circumstances of the commission by making it a work about the very idea of exploration in a far wider sense, a panorama into which Columbus fits comfortably but does not dominate. It is, the composer says, “an allegory about the spirit of exploration and the dislocation that must occur whenever different cultures clash…”[…] Glass’s propulsive melodic and harmonic style provides the requisite element, if not of the eternal, then of the supra-human, providing a musical analogue for that panorama of the idea of exploration, of space and time.
