• Springuel plays much of Tavener’s great cello concerto with the bow-edge creating an often eerie, sometimes menacing effect. The recording has lost none of its gripping impact. The solo line is passionate, austere, ardent and very distinct from the crowd-scene strings, whose jagged clusters bite against the soloist’s lonely legato, especially at the Dormition’s mocking end. Simple the work may be, but it’s also deeply poetic.
