Bliss’s two mature string quartets, from 1941 and 1950, are among his best works. The first, though it has a deeply inward sostenuto third movement, and rhythmically active second and fourth ones, opens with an expansive B flat major calm that brought to mind Brahms’s robust description of the key as an “udder that has always yielded good milk before”. The F minor quartet, written for the Grillers, also has a touching sostenuto movement, but it is the long larghetto finale that is the emotional heart. These brilliantly insightful, ardent, ravishing performances, set down respectively in 1943 and 1950, easily account for the Griller Quartet legend.
