In terms of its magical, long-breathed stillness, much of JohnTavener's music is profoundly indebted to the East (most notably Melina, a tribute to the Greek actress Melina Mercouri). In 1977, tavener was received into the Russian orthodox Church, an even that had a profound effect on his musical thinking, as witness The Repentant Thief, a magical work for clarinet and orchestra (played with sophistication by Andrew Marriner), which juxtaposes meditative incantations with livelier dance sections. Long-tme Tavener collaborator Patricia Roszario is also at her most alluring in the two magical WB Yeats song collections, To a Child Dancing in the Wind and A Mini Song Cycle for Gina.
