Reviews

  • By All Means offers a space where...angular lines resolve into modal cadences, a piano bags out anthem-like fragments over a riot of pointillistic squawks, the whole joyously verging on stylistic meltdown.

One of the most ear-catching discs to come my way in a long time.

Howard Goldstein, BBC Music Magazine, 01 October 2011
  • The American Muhly…is a leading light of contemporary composition, with a new opera about to open at the Coliseum. His idiom is rooted in minimalism, but wildly inclusive. He roves back sensitively through styles, arriving at the unlikely bedrock of Tudor church music…The title piece, a 24-minute concerto for six-string electric violin, brilliantly handled by Gould, is powerfully inventive.
Paul Driver, Sunday Times, 19 June 2011
  • It is hard to avoid the hype building around the youngish and fizzy American composer Nico Muhly…Here and now, we have Seeing is Believing, a CD collection featuring Britain’s brightest young ensemble, Aurora Orchestra, and their hot conductor Nicholas Collon…A few months before he turns 30, Muhly seems poised to take over the world…I love his open mind-the way his music fuses minimalist chatter, adventurous rock and the cadences of Tudor church music…Aurora’s Thomas Gould, the soloist in the title concerto for six-string electric guitar, ferrets out some amazing sounds, from a dirty bass buzz to a celestial shimmer.[Muhly] certainly has the bright skills and lively mind that 21st-century music needs. And the CD is a wonderful calling card for Collon’s Aurora Orchestra. The CD lasts 73 minutes and 23 seconds, and they dazzle in every one of them.
Geoff Brown, The Times, 03 June 2011
  • Seeing is Believing is Nico Muhly’s violin concerto, composed for Thomas Gould and his six-string electric instrument four years ago. Like so much of Muhly’s music, it is immediately engaging and fresh, with some delicious sounds and striking moments, especially the keening glissandi for the solo violin that open the work.
Andrew Clements, The Guardian, 03 June 2011
  • The American wunderkind's latest release.
Andy Gill, The Independent, 03 June 2011
