(A) mixture of expressive lyricism with occasional unexpected harmonic shadings beautifully rendered in Tenebrae’s impeccable performance. The same penchant for peppering his writing with sudden twists of harmony and modulation characterizes the four settings of Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal, premiered in 2010. ‘Upon a Bank’ is the most distinctive of these, a balletic movement, brilliantly executed by Nigel Short’s singers.

Mealor’s choral creations retain their own British glow, yet he could still suitably share a cupboard with Whitacre’s ecstatic music…Lush, warm chords follow a steady pulse, shifting en route into tone cluster crunches before resolving any modest tension with the harmonic equivalent of a handshake…splendidly performed by Nigel Short’s choir Tenebrae…The cycle itself progresses to soaring melodies, simple but striking echo effects, and other devices of a composer clearly with a love of choral singing in his bones. It’s handsome…This is a CD with gorgeous singing, much warmth, a beating heart and, as the title says, a tender light.
