In all three [string quartets] the essentially polyphonic texture of the string writing reveals a constantly surprising sonic environment that never wears out its welcome. This is in contrast, to, say, Philip Glass's quartets, which tend to have a flatter surface. These performances are solid and enthusiastic, and every now and then a little raw...I'm very glad they've been released on Nyman's label.
