• The 'Solemn Overture' of 1997 has echoes of Sibelius in its musical gestures, strong rhythmic profile and raw scoring, though sometimes its sweeping melodic lines recall the Romanticism of Strauss, Mahler or even Berg...the first symphony is tightly developed from the tiny opening ideas in violas, flutes and glockenspiel, which permeate the whole of the singe-movement span. There are some magical sounds in this piece, and Ari Rasilainen and the orchestra bring out all the colours, which are important not only in themselves, but because they help define the contours and structure of the symphony...'
